EFAS relies on hydro-meteorological observations, numerical weather predictions and satellite images to produce, enrich and validate its products, improving their accuracy and reliability. In situ monitoring of hydrological and meteorological variables are particularly crucial for the EFAS model input, calibration, validation and post-processing.

Any contribution (data and verification) from data providers are very welcome and greatly recognised by the EFAS consortium, the Copernicus EMS and the Copernicus program.

In situ data access and use is governed by a data license which has been developed together with the Copernicus in situ component and applies to all Copernicus services.

Meteorological data

EFAS collects the following in situ meteorological data:

  • real-time data
  • historical data: from January 1970 onwards
  • meta data: latitude, longitude, elevation and instrument specifications
  • temporal resolution: highest available (minimum daily)
  • variables:

    • Precipitation
    • 2m air temperature
    • Daily minimum 2m air temperature
    • Daily maximum 2m air temperature
    • 10m Wind speed
    • 10m Wind direction
    • Cloud cover
    • Water vapor pressure
    • Solar radiation
    • Sunshine duration
    • Relative air humidity
    • Evaporation
    • Dew point temperature

The CEMS Meteorological Data Collection Centre is operated by KISTERS AG and the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC) of the German Weather Service (DWD). KISTERS AG hosts the data base, quality control procedures and gridding schemes, and GPCC oversees and improves the quality control procedures and to acts as focal point for meteorological data providers.

Further information on the meteorological data collection, data formats or possible data transfer methods can be found in here. To provide meteorological data or for any further questions, contact us at info@efas.eu.

The updated list of the situ meteorological data providers, as well as detailed information on data collection and quality controls is available from the Annual Reports of the CEMS Meteorological Data Collection Centre.

Hydrological data

EFAS collects the following in situ hydrological data:

  • real-time data
  • historical data
  • meta data: coordinates, river name (local and in English), catchment name (local and in English) and drained surface area, timezone, threshold levels, rating curves.
  • temporal resolution: aggregated values (start, middle and end of the interval), instantaneous values.
  • variables
    • discharge and/or water level
    • highest registered historical values of discharge and/or water
    • lowest registered historical values of discharge and/or water level
    • reservoirs data: level, volume (absolute and percentage), inflow and outflow discharge

The CEMS Hydrological Data Collection Centre is operated by GHENOVA Digital. GHENOVA Digital hosts the data base, performs quality control procedures and data transfers.
